Hyaluronic acid microneedles surpass conventional knowledge.
Outward signs of aging like wrinkles and dullness are caused by a lack of moisture in skin. Hyaluronic acid is critical to retaining skin’s moisture, and our skin loses it as we age. We can try to supplement it from the outside; but high-molecule hyaluronic acid does not penetrate skin easily, and is therefore only effective at retaining moisture on the skin’s surface. This has long been a challenge in the field of cosmetics development.
In response to this challenge, we now focus on soluble microneedle technology, the newest technology to come from our research in the field of medicinal products development. We applied this technology to cosmetics, and established the world’s first industrial manufacturing method for hyaluronic acid microneedles, in which multi-hundred units of macromolecular hyaluronic acid are crystallized into tiny needles. This unprecedented, innovative technology lets high moisture-retaining hyaluronic acid penetrate and melt deep into the skin’s outermost layer, just by applying it to the skin’s surface.

Until now, it was impossible for large-particle medicines like insulin or the influenza vaccine to effectively breach the skin via transdermally-absorbed formulas such as medicated patches or ointments. We wanted to change the future of transdermal delivery. So we conducted further research, and developed our soluble microneedle technology, in which nearly invisible needles are filled with medicinal components.

These needles are composed from components like hyaluronic acid and collagen, which are naturally found in skin, and therefore dissolve right into the skin when applied. For this reason, medicinal components put into the microneedles can be safely and easily released into the skin when the needles dissolve.
This technology makes it possible to deliver medicinal components directly into the skin—even for high molecular medicinal components that were difficult to delivery transdermally up to now—and is gaining notice as a means of drug delivery that could replace the traditional injection.

Hyaluronic acid microneedles dissolve into the moisture in your skin. The photo at right shows that needle-shaped hyaluronic acid dissolves away into the skin after application.
Dermafiller, a cosmetic with a new concept, is a sheet with these hyaluronic acid microneedles arranged on its surface. It is used for targeted, concentrated care, particularly around the eyes and mouth (trouble spots for aging skin). Put it on, and you’ll feel a tingling sensation as hyaluronic acid, collagen, and other vital components melt into your skin throughout the night, penetrating thoroughly deep into the outermost layer. Skin is given tone and moisture that seems to come from the inside out.
